Students– Before all field trips, dances, etc., if you have a library fine, it needs to be PAID!

 

During locker clean out, all text books and library books should immediately be returned to the library.

 

Only 3 yearbooks left!  First come, first served. 

 

8th grade dance on Monday, June 1 from 6:30-9:00.  There is no charge to attend the 8th grade dance but you must have a signed permission slip to attend. 

 

Yearbook DVDs will continue to be sold in Mrs. Cook’s room for $5 until day end today.

Today is the last day to donate to the Penny Drive!  So far, Mrs. Witt-Ski’s class is in the lead with over 100 points!  Ms. May, Mrs. Grandt, Mr. Moore, Mrs. Shuler, and Mrs. Ottesen’s classes are close behind!  Remember, ALL money can be donated and will be given to the American Cancer Society!

 

Attention all 6th grade Volleyball players:  Please stop by Ms. Jurich’s office something today!

Great ride to all Bike Club members that rode out to Kinkaid Lake.  That was a long ride on a beautiful day and everyone can pat themselves on their back for a ride well done.  Ms. Aguilar

Congratulations to all 103 student and 14 staff members for making it into the Million Words Club!! We had a fantastic time Friday celebrating our accomplishments. As a whole MMS has read 236,505,438 words in 4,282 books this year! 8th grade ended up with 64,736,584 million words and 29 members. 7th grade ended up with 67,695,174 million words and 31 members. 6th grade ended up with 104,073,650 million words and 41 members!

Bike Club– if it is raining when we are to leave, we will meet at the bike garage and stay at MMS on the field or the bike garage to eat.

Talent show practice is today after school until 4:15 and tomorrow until 4:45.  Beta Club students helping with lights, sound, hosting, or backstage need to attend both practices.  Missing practice will cause you to be eliminated from the show!

 

The penny drive is still going!  Pennies help your homeroom class win a party and all money helps the American Cancer Society!  You can donate during lunch today and Wednesday.

MMS Bike Club’s final ride will be Tuesday, May 26.  Permission slips will be available Wednesday and MUST be returned by Friday in order to go on the ride.  Bike Club will NOT meet tonight, use this time to work on your homework!

There will be a Beta Club meeting after school today, Tuesday, May 12th in Mrs. Shuler’s room.  We will be talking about the talent show.  All members must attend.

 

Congratulations to Noe Sixtos, Bryson Young, Brockton Tonklinson, Karolynn Mifflin, Peyton Lovel, Jacob McIntosh, Annie Kennedy, Mickey Grode, and Katelynn Roznowski for making it into the Million Words Club!  We currently are at 91 students and 12 teachers/staff for a total of 103 members! There are also 9 students on my radar that are VERY close to making it by Friday’s deadline!  Lets reach 100 MMS!

Chorus students will be dismissed from class today at 12:45 for their performance at Carruthers.  They are to report directly to the chorus room.

MMS Bike Club will have homework help today and bike mechanics are needed to fix bikes and clean up bike garage, 3:15-5:00 pm.

A super big congratulations to Mrs. Lemons for making it into the Million Words Club!  We now have 12 staff members and 84 students for a total of 96 and there are about 10-15 students that are just one book away!!  Keep on reading MMS!

 

Congrats to state track meet qualifiers Alexia Jones (5th place in long jump, 7th place 200m, 8th place 100m), Devon Toliver (5th place high jump), JT Tourville (6th place discus), and Maurice Valliant (4th place shot put).  All received medals for placing in the top 8 in their events!

Do you have an amazing talent?  Then show it off to everyone!  The MMS Talent Show will be May 28th at 9:30 a.m. in the auditorium.  Auditions will be May 13-15 from 3:30-4:45 in the auditorium.  In order to sign up for an audition time, you must do the following:

1.      Submit your lyrics to Mrs. Shuler no later than 3:30 on May 12th.  All lyrics must be approved before you can sign up for an audition time.  All lyrics must be in print form (not hand written).

2.     Submit your music on CD to Mrs. Shuler no later than 3:30 on May 12th.  The music must be on CD and must be approved before you can sign up for an audition time.  If you are going to sing along with a CD, the instrumental version of the song is best.  If you are going to play an instrument or have an accompanist, please see Mrs. Shuler before May 12th.  All music must be approved before you can sign up for an audition time.

3.    If your act does not have music or lyrics, see Mrs. Shuler before 3:30 on May 12th.

4.    When you audition, everyone who is going to be in your act must perform.  Also, you must perform your entire act.

5.     You must attend practices in order to be in the show.  Practices will be from 3:30-4:45 in the auditorium on May 20, 21, 26, and 27.  Missing the final rehearsal on the 27th will result in your elimination from the talent show.

 

Athletes interested in Summer Speed Camp can pick up information in the office on the counter.

 

All three state qualifying history fair projects got recognition at the Illinois State History Expo on May 7th.

Josh Ruiz and Dallas Hansil received a "Superior (blue ribbon)" recognition on their Flight Project.

Christina Uribe and Jennifer Hernandez received an "Excellent (red ribbon)" recognition for their Cherry Coal Mine Disaster Project.

Sydney Cook and Ada McCarroll received an "Excellent (red ribbon)" recognition for their Cahokia Mounds Project. The girls also received a cash prize for the XVII Century Award given by: The Illinois Society Colonial Dames. 

All of these students and our chaperones represented not only MMS, but our entire district in such a great way. Thank you Ms. May and Mrs. Parr for making this day so special for the kids

Congratulations to the MMS Chorus and the MMS Band and Jazz Band for excellent performances in Memphis this weekend.  The Chorus placed first with a gold rating and the Band and Jazz Band placed first with a silver rating.  Ms. Herring and Ms. Kearney are very proud!

 

Track practice ends at 4:30 for the rest of the season.  No practice on Friday.

 

PARRC testing begins tomorrow.  All students need to be on time to school.

Solo and Ensemble band results from last Saturday:  20 first solos, 7 second solos, 2 First Ensembles, and 2 Second Ensembles.

 

8th grade MMS Volleyball wins the Benton 12 team tournament last  Saturday going 5-0 on the day.  They defeated the state champion Massac County from last year and improved their record to 14-2 and undefeated in conference play.  There is a home volleyball game today vs. Trico starting at 4 pm.  Come out “BLUE CREW”, show up and enjoy the game and help support MMS Volleyball.  Coach Layne

The 8th grade Language Arts classes are raising money to drill fresh water wells for South Sudan and we need your help.  Mr. Wells and Ms. Tefft will show you a video explaining why we need to help drill wells for this new country.  Now through Wednesday any dollar you bring in will earn a water drop with your name on it on our water well wall, ($10=green, $25=silver, and $50=gold).

Water fact of the day:  Only 27% of the population of South Sudan have access to safe water.

3rd quarter ends Friday.  All 3rd quarter work needs to be completed and turned in.  Report cards go home after spring break.

Boys basketball is headed to the State Championship game on Saturday at Rend Lake College.  MMS is taking a fan bus!  If you would like to go and cheer your team to victory you may sign up for the fan bus.  You will need a signed permission slip and $3 entry fee due at the time you sign up.  Bus leaves at 9:15 a.m. from the statue.

No boys basketball practice today.  Tomorrow practice will be 3:30-5:00, Wed. 3:30-4:30, Thurs. 3:30-5:00, and Friday will be free throws only

 All those who applied for the Newspaper class during Rti will meet in room 320 starting today for Rti.

 Book Fair previews are today and Monday. 

 During the Book Fair, the library is closed from 8:30 until Rti.  Students may come to the book fair with money after Monday, two or three at a time.  The Book Fair will close at the end of regular class each day and the library will be open during Rti and after school.  The Book Fair will close after parent/teacher conferences next Thursday, Nov. 20th.

 The Murphysboro High School Crimson Express competed their 25th Anniversary Competition season at Pinckneyville this past Saturday.  The band received Best Percussion, Best Soloist, and 1st Place in Class AA.  The band has received 1st place in their class in every competition entered this season.  Great job!  Mr. Moreland

 Walkers needed for MMS 5K & Fitness Club.  All students are welcome to join no matter what your current fitness level is.  Meets every Tue. and Thur. after school until 4:10.  Pick up form in office.

 Builders Club:  Don’t forget the shifts that you signed up for.  If you signed up to attend the Haunted Hayride with Builders Club you need to see Mr. Wells for a form, you WILL NOT be allowed to go without it!  Meeting Wednesday after school.  If you want to do Trick or Treat for UNICEF and help fight Maternal Neonatal Tetanus, make plans to work this project.  Any questions, see Mr. Wells.

  Cross Country– The white bus will be outside the small gym around back after school for XC runners that need a ride to the party.

 6th grade girls basketball players– You will have practice tomorrow (Wed.) in the small gym from 3:30-5:00.

 The play cast list will be posted today after school on the auditorium doors.  Practice for all members will begin Thursday 3:30-4:30.  Schedules and scripts will be passed out Thursday.

 Tomorrow during breakfast is the final time to get your Punctuality Poster in!

 Tickets go on sale today for the Fall/Halloween Dance on Thursday, Oct. 23 during your lunch periods.  Tickets are $5.00.

 Student Council workers:  6th grade- Maci Uffleman and Caleb Ferrill; 7th grade– Jayclynn Presutti and Roni Crowell; 8th grade– Maur’Najah Simmons and Natalie Followell.  Report to Ms. Ferguson during your lunch periods.

 Big Muddy Monster Haunted Hayride and House at Riverside Park on Thurs., Fri., and Sat. beginning at 7:00 pm.  Tickets are $6 or $5 if you bring a nonperishable food item.  If you are interested in helping out at this event, pick up permission slip in office.

  If you made a clay pumpkin in Art Club and did not get to glaze it, you can come up to the art room during Rti today (Friday) to finish it.  Check in with your Rti teacher FIRST and get a pass.

 The MMS Chorus is selling St. Louis Cardinals Calendars.   The calendars have great pictures, even post season as well as coupons to various locations in the St. Louis area.  Calendars are $15 each and would make a great gift.  See Ms. Herring or any chorus member.

 Bike Club:  Community Service bike ride to the Youth & Recreation Center will be next Tuesday, Oct. 21st, 3:15-5:30.

 Community-wide event with SIU basketball coach Barry Hinson on Sunday, October 19th at 6:30 pm at United Methodist Church.  Coach Hinson will speak on raising kids who play sports in a culture of excessive competition, demanding expectations and the many challenges to finding an acceptable balance for youth in academics, sports, family, and fun.  Admission is free.

 Those that made the boys basketball team will be posted outside cafeteria door and gym door after school today.

 Cross Country reminder:  JV runners that want to go to state to cheer on the varsity, you must sign up in the office  TODAY.

 Congratulations to Fundraiser top sellers: 

Jonathan Prudencio top seller for 8th grade, Brocton Tonkinson 7th grade, and Cayden Askew 6th grade.  Their names were put in a drawing and Jonathan won the $100.  Brocton and Cayden won $25 each.  For every 5 items sold drawing, Alexis Ellis is the winner of $100.

 Cross Country practice until 4:30 today and tomorrow.
